Despacito on ice at the 2018 Winter Olympics
February 11, 2018
Whether you hate it or love it, it is a song that is hard to refuse moving to, if even just a little. For the first time in Winter Olympics history, ice skaters could perform their routines to music with lyrics, in a move to attract a young audience to the sport. Yura Min and Alexander Gamelin who are part of the South Korean ice skating team chose Luis Fonsi’s Latin banger ‘Despacito’to kick off their performance. Chinese ice skaters Shiyue Wang and Xinyu Liu decided to dance to the song too.

Skaters have really embraced the change. Many chose to perform to some of the most popular numbers. Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani from America skated to Perez Prado’s “Mambo No. 5.” French Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprès chose Ed Sheeran’s “Make it Rain.”
