The wrap-up: 2018 Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival

February 25, 2018

The 2018 Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival was absolutely amazing! Everyone witnessed three days of musical magic and greatness. The event was filled with surprises, excitement and endless fun. From day one with Duran Duran, to the second day with John Legend and finishing off with the always-golden Ricky Martin. We captured the moments as they happened. If you weren’t there, here is what you missed.

Leading up to the event, Mastercard teamed up with Heart 107.1 to find some of the UAE’s most talented singers. Over the period of a week, listeners could send in 30-second demos for a chance to sing at the Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival. Three spectacular voices, Eshani Shekar, Nicole Stevens and Lucia Ratliff, made the cut and performed on the same stage as the A-listers. They performed for an eager audience, as they started something priceless with the help of Mastercard.

Throughout the three-day festival, Heart 107.1 broadcasted live in the evenings from the Mastercard On-Air booth, meeting fans and giving them a behind the scenes look at what goes on during the show. The booth also invited visitors to audition and sing for their chance to win tickets to the next day.

Day 1 – Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival

The first day, Wednesday the 21st of February, commenced what would be one of the best Jazz Festivals Dubai has ever been privy to. Our Mastercard winner, Eshani Shekar wowed the crowd before UK’s Renegade Brass Band, introduced by Heart Breakfast’s Tim and Faris, opened for Duran Duran. A funky ensemble of jazz and hip-hop, they got the crowd ready for the legendary synth-pop band. Duran Duran showed us why old is gold, they played their hits Come Undone, Rio, Ordinary World and had everyone feeling nostalgic.

Day 2 – Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival

Day two, Thursday the 22nd of February, was perhaps the most awaited for. Nicole Stevens, the second Mastercard winner, sang her heart out before American singer and TV host, China Moses opened for John Legend. Her strong performance was awe-inspiring and deep. Legend who returned to the UAE for the second day wowed and swooned the audience. The Grammy and Academy-award winner made sure he kept everyone on their feet with his chartbusters and soothing ballads Love Me NowUsed to Love U and Ordinary People. He then ended with a soulful solo on the piano with his award-winning All of Me.

Day 3 – Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival

The final day, Friday the 23rd of February,  of the Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival left everyone wanting more and impatient for next year. Our third Mastercard winner, Lucia Ratliff, hyped everyone up before the night was sprinkled with Latin flavour, beginning with Colombian singer Vera Ciocca who put on a show for the crowd before Ricky Martin took over. Grammy-Award winner Ricky Martin put on a dazzling finale to wrap up the event, banging out his smash hits like Living La Vida Loca, She Bangs and Maria with the moves to match. The audience got a special surprise when he premiered his brand new single Fiebre, featuring Wisin and Yandel – which he streamed live on all his social media channels from the festival.
