Shola rose to fame in 1997 with the song ‘You Might Need Somebody,’ then the year after she won a Brit Award for Best British Female Artist. The story of her discovery is one of sheer luck – right place at the right time. She was walking down a station in London, singing her heart out because the “acoustics were great,” when Kwame Kwaten, a producer at the FreakStreet record label, heard her. He had stayed on his train too long and got off at the wrong station. Fate had decided right there that something big would come of this. More than 20 years later, the song has become a classic.
To honour International Women’s Day, Jade asked Shola who her favourite female artist was and she picked English singer-songwriter, Kate Bush. Her favourite actresses ad Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Angela Basset. Finally, her biggest inspiration is her mum!
Fans can expect new music from her very soon, she is currently working on and recording some new tracks. Shola is also in the midst of writing her memoir about having been there. She hopes to one day have the honour of working with Dr. Dre and Pharell, they would be her dream collaboration. She believes that the female artists, especially in the UK, are coming up very strongly and represent a promising future.
