If you’ve ever had a broken heart, these were probably the best breakup songs
May 31, 2018
Almost everyone has been there, been through a nasty, heart-shattering breakup; or perhaps you’re going through one right (which we’re so terribly sorry about). We know it seems like nothing in the world could make it easier but, music helps us to face and deal with hard times in a way that things can’t quite do. Especially the songs below, they give us a little hope, which is better than absolute bleakness because it makes us see that we’re not alone in this.
Spotify’s trends expert Shanon Cook to TIME that the platform has over half a million breakup-themed playlists.
“Heartache is what motivates many artists to write songs in the first place. Some people might not want or know how to articulate how they’re feeling during a rough time. Maybe it’s nice to let Sam Smith or Kelly Clarkson express it for you.”
Here are some of the best breakup songs of all time, according to TIME.
Stitches – Shawn Mendes
Favourite line: “Just like a moth drawn to a flame, you lured me in, I couldn’t sense the pain.”
Back to Black – Amy Winehouse
Favourite line: “We only said goodbye with words. I died a hundred times.”
Somebody That I Used to Know – Gotye
We’re so guilty of belting this out. Our favourite line is “Told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company.”
Let Her Go – Passenger
Favourite line: “‘Cause you only need the light when it’s burning low. Only miss the sun when it starts to snow. Only know you love her when you let her go.”
Irreplaceable – Beyoncé
This 2006 classic is bound to make you feel strong and empowered. Say it with us, “Know your worth!”
I Fall Apart – Post Malone
Post Malone shows us that sometimes it’s not as easy to move on, “Try to brush it off but it keep on goin’. All these scars can’t help from showing.”
Happier – Ed Sheeran
The ultimate romantic crooner, Ed Sheeran may be engaged to the love of his life but he gives us this line to quote, “Ain’t nobody hurt you like I hurt you, but ain’t nobody needs you like I do.”
Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers
The line that speaks to us is “Only darkness when she’s gone, and this house just ain’t a home any time she goes away.”
Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson
Clarkson lets us know it’s not always a bad thing to be single.
Survivor – Destiny’s Child
Come out on top. Take it home with “Now that you’re out of my life, I’m so much better. You thought that I’d be weak without you, but I’m stronger. You thought that I’d be broke without you, but I’m richer. You thought that I’d be sad without you, I laugh harder.”
