June 18, 2018

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, we cannot ignore the musical element of the game – the World Cup anthem. So, for nostalgic reasons, we are running through the biggest football anthems from the 1990s up until this year. Check out the songs below!

“Un’estate Italiana” was the official World Cup song in 1990. Its English title was “To Be Number One.”

Queen’s “We are the Champions” was not written for the World Cup but it was used as the official song and well, you cannot say you do not love it because it is QUEEN!

Slipping into the 2000s almost, Ricky Martin gave us “La Copa de la Vida” in 1998 and there has not been a time we can remember when this song came on and we did not dance our socks off.

The 2002 World Cup gave fans the “Boom” by Anastacia.

The World Cup in Germany came with a catchy tune of its own, “Celebrate the Day.”

In 2010, there were two contenders for the ultimate World Cup song. We had Shakira’s “Waka Waka” and K’NAAN’s “Wavin’ Flag.”

The World Cup in Brazil meant that fans across the globe would be witness to some pretty heavy dance tracks to infuse the football fever.

And we are here, in 2018 in Russia and we have got two songs fighting to be the anthem for this year’s tournament – “Live it up” by Nicky Jam and “Colours” by Jason Derulo.
