The princess of R&B would have turned 41 today.
At the age of 22, a plane crash a minute after takeoff resulted in her death as it was leaving the Bahamas where she had filmed the music video for “Rock the Boat.”
Aaliyah’s legacy continues today through musicians such as Drake and Frank Ocean, who both have covered her songs. Although Aaliyah was a big star, she still remained mysterious and she liked to keep it that way.

1. She was Gladys Knight’s niece.
Through marriage, the legendary soul singer Gladys Knight was her aunt. She was the wife of Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson.
2. Quincy Jones’s daughter and Aaliyah were besties.
Kidada Jones, Quincy Jones’s daughter, was one of Aaliyah’s best friends. They met while shooting a Tommy Hilfiger campaign in the 1990s.
3. Aaliyah was a bit of a geek.
In an interview in 2001, the singer revealed she was a fan of the Harry Potter books and played video games such as “Time Crisis II.”
4. She was the youngest singer to perform at the Oscars.
